Mining (Miscellaneous) Amendment Bill 2010

The Minerals and Energy Resources Division (MER) of DMITRE has undertaken a review of the Mining Act 1971 (the Act) and Mining Regulations 1998 (the Regulations).

The key objectives of the review were to:

  • Deliver greater transparency
  • Streamline assessment and approvals processes, and
  • Improve efficiency for MER’s core regulatory responsibilities

SACOME has been involved in the process of review through our Exploration Committee and a small working group holding a series of ‘pre-consultation’ briefing meetings with PIRSA MER staff leading to PIRSA MER holding an open industry workshop on 20th July 2009 at the Adelaide Town Hall. Members were also invited to write to SACOME with comments regarding the draft Bill. This culminated in SACOME making a formal written submission which was lodged on August 8th 2009.

SACOME representatives have had numerous discussions with DMITRE MER staff and lobbied the major political parties and selected independents regarding aspects of the proposed Bill and various amendments put forward by various parties and independents. A second reading of the Bill was moved in the Upper House on 11th May 2010, with amendments debated in ‘Committee’ from 20th July – 22nd July 2010.

SACOME had concerns about two particular land access amendments that were scrapped because of measured lobbying by SACOME.
