Climate Change

windfarm_comp

Climate Change is a major policy area for SACOME. Government policy mechanisms to tackle climate change will have profound implications on resource companies specifically through increasing the cost of energy and trade competitiveness of energy intensive commodities.

As a risk management issue it will be good business for resources companies to factor climate change and the inevitable cost placed on GHG emissions into their business plans. SACOME is focused on ensuring the SA industry is considered in the national discussion on the response to climate change, and an appropriate transition to the low carbon economy is established to ensure the sustainability and viability of the SA mineral resources industry.

While there will inevitably be challenges for the industry through implementation of climate change policy, the transition to a low carbon economy does present real opportunities for SA. As the electricity sector moves to a lower carbon base, SA’s rich endowment of gas, geothermal, wind, solar and wave resources will position the state to capitalise on the new economy.

Clean Energy Future

The Clean Energy Regulator have released a Guide to Carbon Price Liability as a general guide and source of information for companies regarding the Carbon Tax, which comes into effect on July 1 2012. The guide should be read in conjunction with the Clean Energy Act 2011 and the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act 2007 (NGER Act).
