Junior Explorers

How do we explore for minerals? In this session students will get to practice their map skills, identifying common map symbols and learning about the kinds of maps that geologists use to help them find mineral deposits. Students will then get to explore some of Australia’s most famous mine sites, learning about minerals and their uses as they go. This session is perfect for all junior explorers and a good follow on session from Minerals Matter.

Glorious Gold

Discover the amazing properties and uses of this dazzling metal with the help of life size educational mats. In this interactive session, students will bring to life the properties of gold, as they squash flat, stretch into a wire, as well as impersonate gold’s heaviness and electrical conductivity. They will even get to work out their value if they were made from real gold! This session involves lots of interactive fun, culminating in a game of mineral BINGO. Students will get to touch real samples of gold and other minerals.

Mineral Detectives

What is a geologist? What do they do? This hands-on presentation steps students through a series of simple tests and observations that will provide them with an understanding of how geologists identify and distinguish minerals from one another. Students can then put their new found knowledge into practice with a ‘mystery bag’ of hand specimens. The different everyday uses of minerals are also discussed.

Exploration - Finding an Ore Body

What is an ore body? Where do we find one? These days, successful mineral exploration is rarely a matter of stumbling over gold nuggets in your back garden. In this presentation students investigate the exploration process, from the research, application for an exploration licence, heritage protection, aerial and ground surveys, drilling, laboratory analysis, right through to the application for a mining licence. Students will gain particular insight into the role of the exploration geophysicist.

Mining Types and Technology

Mining engineers prepare plans for the type, size, location and construction of mines. In this session students will discover what the main types of mineral extraction are and when they are used – surface, underground mining and in situ leaching. They will view multimedia of different mines and quarries, get to dress up as a mining engineer and participate in activities to understand why mining processes need to be specific to the location being mined.

Mining within our Environment

This presentation covers environmental management and the role of the environmental scientist in assisting mining companies care for the natural environment. The award winning EnviroSmart school resource is used to show students how mining companies and environmental scientists work together to protect flora and fauna, air, land and water. Students will also have the opportunity to conduct an audit of their own school to identify ways that they can lesson the impact they have on the environment.

What is energy? What are renewable and non-renewable energy sources? This presentation looks at the major sources of energy in South Australia and their advantages and disadvantages in terms of sustainable development. Practical demonstrations are used to illustrate a number of forms of energy transfer and electricity generation.
