Mining for talent - A study of women on boards in the mining industry by WIM (UK) & PwC

A 2013 publication has found that the mining industry has the lowest number of women on boards of any industry group in the world.

The study, undertaken by Women in Mining UK (and other WIMnet chapters globally) in conjunction with Anglo American, Rio Tinto and PwC, is the first of three reports designed to widen the debate about the lack of representation of women on boards in the mining industry.

The top 500 globally listed mining companies were surveyed for the first report, out of a total of 2600 listed mining companies. Together, these companies have a market capitalisation comprising 97% of the global industry, or $1.05 trillion of the $1.09 trillion industry total.

The findings expose a number of jurisdictions - namely London - for not addressing the issue. It goes further to support other published reports regarding the strong correlation between financial performance and the participation of women on the board.

Key findings include:

The top 100 mining companies have more women on boards, while the top 101 – 500 mining companies have more women in senior executive positions;

The larger the market capitalisation of the company, the more likely there is to be a woman on the board;

Mining companies listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange had the best level of female board representation, while those listed on the London Stock Exchange had the worst level of representation;

Profit margins are higher for mining companies with women on the board; and

Mining is the worst sector for gender diversity – worse than the oil and gas industry – with just 5% of board seats held by women in the top 500 mining companies.

Women in the South Australian Resources Industry Report 2010

Initiated and supported by the WinRSA Committee, the SACOME Women in the South Australian Resources Industry Survey (2010) was designed to determine the female workforce across the resources sector in South Australia.

WinRSA and SACOME recognise the importance of analysing the female workforce within South Australia to determine if the industry is operating under best practice policies and maintaining an appropriate participation and application of the eligible female workforce.
