The Sun Shines on Solar

The South Australian Chamber of Mines and Energy has welcomed the news that the $350m Cultana Solar farm has obtained development approval. SACOME’s Joint Electricity Purchasing Group provided a critical foundation customer for Sanjeev Gupta’s Cultana solar farm.

SACOME Chief Executive Officer, Rebecca Knol said; “SACOME led a consortia of South Australia’s largest energy users to collectively purchase power in the market with the express aim of underpinning new generation to provide market competition.

“The electricity requirement of the consortium was sufficient to underpin the risk for the development of this solar farm and an eight-year contract was signed with SIMEC Energy Australia in 2018. We are delighted to see this development approval and welcome the jobs, lower energy prices and investment in our State that it will bring.”

This is the first project in Sanjeev Gupta’s $US1 billion renewable energy plan for the Upper Spencer Gulf. The company’s energy plan also includes cogeneration at GFG’s Whyalla Primary Steel plant using waste gas; the world’s largest lithium‐ion battery near Port Augusta; and pumped hydro projects at GFG’s Middleback Ranges mining operations.
