Generating Results Post Open Pit Mining
Community, economy and environment set to benefit from Hillgrove pumped hydro deal

The South Australian Chamber of Mines and Energy (SACOME) applauds Hillgrove Resources’ ongoing commitment to the community and their responsible approach to land use. Hillgrove has announced they have entered into a contract with AGL to transform their Kanmantoo open pit mine into a pumped hydro facility while retaining processing and mining rights outside the Giant Pit.

The Hillgrove Kanmantoo mine sits between Mount Barker and Murray Bridge, within an hour’s drive of Adelaide and has contributed $160 million directly to the community over the last ten years. Throughout the life of the mine, Hillgrove has prioritised community engagement and consultation and has ensured investment in the area through hiring only local contractors and suppliers.

Rebecca Knol, SACOME Chief Executive Officer said; “Hillgrove should be commended for their creative and forward-thinking approach to post open pit mining. This solution is one that takes advantage of the unique topography & geology and will provide an ongoing economic contribution to South Australia.

“This is a company that had gone above and beyond legal requirements throughout the life of the mine and again they are raising the bar post closure. Hillgrove provides a real example of the positive contributions mining companies can make to the communities in which they operate.”

Steve McClare, Hillgrove CEO added “The trust, support and growth of the community around Kanmantoo has been deeply valued by us and we are pleased to have found a solution that will continue to bring economic benefits, not just to the local community, but to South Australia more broadly.”
