Jumping for Joy!
The South Australian Chamber of Mines and Energy (SACOME) welcomes today’s Budget commitment of $40 million by the State Government for the duplication of the Joy Baluch Bridge in Port Augusta. With completion projected in 2021.
SACOME similarly welcomes the fast-tracking of $160 million of Commonwealth funding for completion of the project.
Port Augusta is one of Australia’s most strategically important transport corridors, sitting at the heart of the nation’s east-west and north-south freight routes.
Port Augusta is also a hub for South Australia’s mineral-rich far north and western regions, with the projected growth of these provinces expected to exert further pressure on this infrastructure bottleneck.
SACOME is pleased that its extensive lobbying in partnership with the South Australian Freight Council (SAFC) and the Royal Automobile Association (RAA) has resulted in government investment in this critical economic infrastructure.
SACOME CEO, Rebecca Knol said: “The South Australian Chamber of Mines and Energy is delighted that the joint call for State funding and Commonwealth co-funding for major infrastructure projects has been answered in this Budget.
“The duplication of the Joy Baluch Bridge is a key infrastructure priority for SACOME. This infrastructure is a critical enabler for 15 million tonnes of freight and 9,000 vehicles each year and duplication will create economic efficiencies for the resources, agricultural and freight sectors, ultimately enhancing the prosperity of our State.
“We extend thanks to our allied peak industry bodies - the SAFC and RAA – along with the Port Augusta City Council for working in partnership to deliver funding for the duplication of the Joy Baluch Bridge.”
