The STEM Program Pilot StudyA pilot program was delivered in partnership with Catholic Education South Australia (CESA) to introduce the STEM Digital Technologies Pilot to participating schools, alongside industry partners BHP, Nyrstar, Hillgrove Resources, Fortescue, and SIMEC Mining. Conducted during Term 2, 2024, the pilot evaluated the effectiveness of the Automation Challenges in developing foundational Digital Technologies skills.
The initiative involved six schools, 49 teachers, and 403 students, supported through professional learning workshops, online collaboration, and daily assistance. The partnered schools included:
The pilot concluded that the program was highly effective and recommended expansion to additional schools, including primary and secondary level with in South Australian Schools. Notably, 100% of participating school leaders from the pilot said they would endorse the program. Teachers who participated shared positive feedback: “The lesson plans are very easy to follow and so I have found it very easy to implement the lessons as I don't have to come up with the activities. The resources such as the maps, the Wombot skins and the plastic sleeves with letters and numbers are all really useful and allow for expansion of the lessons and being creative with different ideas.” - Year 2 Teacher “The tasks have been very motivating for students. There are lots of squeals of “It’s working!” It has also helped students to become more resilient, persistent and curious. Those who are more confident mentor those who are less so.” - Year 6 Teacher In addition, 100% of schools participating in the Pilot are keen to continue the Program, with 75% considering the integration of all automations as a comprehensive approach to digital learning. |
