Whyalla Shines Bright
The 13th GMUSG & SACOME Conference & Trade Expo promised to deliver "the greatest networking and industry briefing event" and has exceeded all expectations. Its sell-out performance has set a historical benchmark as arguably the largest regional industry event in South Australia, with over 435 delegates coming together to hear from an impressive line-up of industry experts including our CEO, Rebecca Knol.
Lyn Breuer Mayor of Whyalla, opened day one with her inspiring words: "the fog has lifted on Whyalla". This has set the tone for an event which nurtures a profit pipeline from industry to community, encouraging attendees to "explore opportunities and develop business relationships", as said by GMUSG Chairman, Greg Clothier.
As a membership organisation, SACOME's role is to drive quality advocacy and policy direction to create value for the sector. Rebecca Knol briefed delegates on SACOME's four key policy areas:
SACOME member BHP announced today the Local Buying Program to the Upper Spencer Gulf and Far North. This program supports local communities by allowing small business to engage directly with BHP, helping communities, not just big companies, which will share in BHP's growth story. Isaac Hinton, Manager Supply - Olympic Dam, said: “BHP will be working with our suppliers to build a foundation for long-term, safe, sustainable growth at Olympic Dam."
Bill Watt, Manager - Technology, Nyrstar, discussed the transformation of the Port Pirie smelter. The $660 million investment will not only process a wider range of high margin metal bearing feed materials, but will transform the perception of the Port Pirie region.
Daniel Rowlands, Manager Fixed Plant, Arrium Mining discussed the long-term vision to increase mining and steel capacity after the announcement of GFG Alliance to buy the Arrium Steelworks. GFG Alliance is on track to finalise the transaction within the next week, which cements a positive future for the Whyalla community and the Upper Spencer Gulf region.
Rebecca Knol presented on SACOME’s electricity buying group, highlighting the "outstanding example of collaboration across sectors, turning difficulty into an opportunity". Rebecca then chaired an engaging afternoon session on SA Energy Industry Solutions featuring panellists The Hon. Tom Koutsantonis MP, Treasurer and Minister for Mineral Resources & Energy, and Reza Evans, Managing Partner, CQ Partners Energy Consulting.
The Hon. Josh Frydenberg MP, Federal Minister for the Environment and Energy, announced today that the Federal Government will provide up to $12 million for a 30 MW large-scale battery at the Dalrymple substation on the Yorke Peninsula. SACOME member ElectraNet will design, build and own the battery, which is expected to be operational by early 2018.
This outstanding conference continues tomorrow.
