$2 million in scholarships to Unearth your future
A partnership between the resources sector, the State Government and the Playford Trust will provide over $2 million in scholarships for students enrolling in mining and petroleum engineering at the University of Adelaide over the next five years.
This industry and government initiative recognises the growing demand nationally for mining and petroleum engineers.
A total of 20 two-year scholarships will be awarded annually. For each industry-funded scholarship, the State Government will match a scholarship of equal value. Each scholarship is valued at $20k for the two-year term.
The scholarships will be administered by the Playford Trust, which supports high-achieving South Australian students working in areas of strategic importance to the State.
Applications for 2020 are now open and can be accessed here.
Minister for Energy and Mining Dan van Holst Pellekaan said, “the Marshall Government recognises the importance of the resources and energy sectors in delivering economic growth for South Australia
“I’m extremely pleased the Marshall Government is investing $1.2 million in scholarships through the Playford Trust to encourage students to undertake petroleum and mining engineering programmes.
“Scholarship recipients will go on to well paid and secure jobs in an important growth area for our state.”
SACOME CEO Rebecca Knol said: “SACOME, on behalf of the resources sector, is delighted the State Government has committed to matched scholarships for entrants to mining and petroleum engineering
“These scholarships aim to attract South Australia’s most talented minds to an industry that is leading our technological future
“In addition to being at the cutting edge of innovation, the resources sector produces the materials that enable the boundaries of science to be challenged. The sector is as relevant today as it was in the bronze age.
“As we strive to decarbonise our future, these scholarship recipients will be instrumental in shaping the modern world
“The resources industry provides employment for more than 26,000 South Australians, yet we are experiencing a skills shortage of petroleum and mining engineers
“This is concerning for an industry that delivers $6.4 billion in production, $5.8 billion in exports and over $300 million in royalties annually to South Australians.”
Former Premier of South Australia and Chair of the Playford Trust, Dean Brown said:
“The Playford Trust offers scholarships to young South Australians to encourage them to further their studies and so eventually enhance the development of South Australian industries.
“The mining and petroleum industries are a vital part of this State’s economy and the Trust is delighted to partner with the South Australian Government and SACOME to offer these scholarships for engineering students wanting to work in these industries.”
Professor Anton Middelberg, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research), University of Adelaide, said: “The University of Adelaide is pleased to collaborate with SACOME, the State Government and Playford Trust to address the skill shortage in an industry which is critical to the SA economy
“These scholarships will assist our students to pursue a career in the mining and petroleum sector as engineers of the future.”
