Australian minerals exploration deserves stronger funding support
SACOME has joined the Minerals Council of Australia in welcoming the Federal Opposition’s commitment to invest $75 million in Geoscience Australia’s Exploring the Future initiative.
Australian mining and minerals processing is the nation’s largest source of export revenue and provides highly paid, highly skilled jobs to thousands of workers in regional communities.
SACOME CEO Rebecca Knol said “the South Australian resource sector is the engine room of the South Australian economy employing 26,000 people directly and indirectly, delivering $5.6 billion in production, almost $4 billion in exports and $237 million in royalties to South Australians".
Previous exploration incentive programs have been fundamental in South Australia’s ability to attract investment in mineral exploration. Direct funding to explorers remains critical in supporting the resources sector in the discovery of new deposits and ensuring a continuing pipeline of resource projects.
Tania Constable, Chief Executive Officer of Minerals Council of Australia said; "Investment in pre-competitive geoscience exploration is essential in building a pipeline of mining projects that will deliver jobs in the minerals sector across regional Australia into the future. This commitment will fund vital data acquisition using geophysical surveys, geochemical sampling, hydrological mapping and stratigraphic drilling. Australia faces growing competition to attract the international capital the resources industry needs to convert our minerals potential into lasting economic benefits."
The South Australian Chamber of Mines & Energy continues to lobby for mineral exploration incentives as much of the State’s potentially prospective geology, even in relatively well-explored areas, remains uncharacterised beneath cover and would benefit from strategic drilling.
