Allana SaguboPetroleum Engineering
"At first, I was undecided as to what pathway to follow – chemical or petroleum engineering – but in the end I decided to do both. I get to apply different skills, but they are both very connected". It was a love of the water that first piqued Allana Sagubo’s interest in Petroleum Engineering. “My cousin works for the Merchant Marines in the Philippines and would tell stories of working on the ships and the offshore oil rigs. I have always enjoyed being around water so working offshore just sounded like a cool thing to do,” Allana recalls. Allana moved to Adelaide from the Philippines in late 2019 and started studying a Bachelor of Engineering (Petroleum) (Honours), Major in Chemical Engineering at the University of Adelaide in early 2020. |
“Both my parents are engineers which also played a big part in my decision to go into engineering. At first, I was undecided as to what pathway to follow – chemical or petroleum engineering – but in the end I decided to do both. I get to apply different skills, but they are both very connected.” she says.
Allana studied science, physics, chemistry, and maths at high school, setting her up for tertiary studies.
“I really enjoyed physics and the research components. And maths – but I have a love / hate relationship with maths,” she laughs.
“I am really enjoying university, there are really good support systems in place, and I have formed a number of close friendships. The Professors are always very helpful and there are great connections with industry which we are encouraged to pursue.”
“While I was studying, I managed to secure a Chemical Engineering Internship with Heathgate Resources which was great. I went up on site a few times and really enjoyed it – the team were really supportive, and I learnt a lot which I was able to apply to my studies.”
Allana attended an Unearth Your Future event hosted by SACOME at BHP in 2019 where she was able to speak with other industry representatives and first learnt about the Playford Trust Scholarship opportunities.

“A number of my friends from university went on to receive scholarships including Luke Webb, Callum Martin, Harry Parker, and Adi Murray. I meant to apply back in 2022, but it wasn’t until I was cleaning out my desk late last year that I found the brochure and decided to apply for the 2023 scholarship round,” Allana explains.
“I was ecstatic when I found out I had been successful in receiving a Resources Sector Scholarship. I am very, very grateful for the help and everything that the scholarship is providing, including continued industry connection.” While she finishes her studies, Allana maintains her love of the water by regular lap swimming and working as a Lifeguard at the University of South Australia. “I love being in the water. It’s a great mental break from the technical work of uni. I also enjoy taking part in charity swims whenever I get the chance, including the 60km Starlight Super Swim which I have completed for the last 2 years now”. “It helps fill the void until I can one day work on an offshore rig,” she says with a smile. |
