Progress for Statutes Amendment (Mineral Resources) Bill
The South Australian Chamber of Mines and Energy (SACOME) welcomes passage of the Statutes Amendment (Mineral Resources) Bill by the House of Assembly.
SACOME has consistently supported the passage of this Bill and hopes that the bipartisan approach to reform of the Mining Act continues in the Legislative Council without any further amendment.
While SACOME acknowledges passage of the Bill as a positive step in improving the Mining Act for all stakeholders, SACOME has consistently called for a structural review as detailed in SACOME’s 2017 Leading Practice Mining Acts Review submission, with particular focus on reform of the approvals process under the Act.
SACOME President, Greg Hall said; “The passing of the Statutes Amendment (Mineral Resources) Bill in the House of Assembly is an important first step to modernising this 48-year-old piece of legislation.
“We have consistently supported passage of the Bill in its current form, noting our concerns with the approvals process under the Act are not yet addressed. SACOME will continue to support consultation needed to reform the oldest mining legislation in the country, ensuring it is fit for our modern mining industry and that it upholds the behavioural practices demanded by the South Australian public.
“SACOME has called for an independent structural review of the Mining Act to support this aim.
“We look forward to being part of ongoing reform of the State’s mining laws and remain committed to working collaboratively with the South Australian Government and other stakeholders to ensure that standards continue to improve, and that mining and agricultural sectors can continue to sustainably co-exist.”
