Resources sector welcomes NEG announcement
The South Australian Chamber of Mines & Energy (SACOME) welcomes the Energy Security Board’s release of the National Energy Guarantee (NEG) consultation paper.
The NEG – proposed by the Commonwealth Government as Australia’s future energy policy – is intended to retain existing resources and encourage new investment in the National Electricity Market (NEM) while ensuring system reliability; and that emissions standards are achieved. Today’s announcement is the next step towards achieving this goal.
The NEG is driven by key issues flagged by the Finkel review – lower electricity prices, emissions reduction and improved system reliability.
Gas is a critical component of South Australia’s energy mix with gas fired generation making up 50 per cent of the state’s electricity production.
SACOME CEO Rebecca Knol said: “On the back the recently released energy policy review by the International Energy Agency, gas is a crucial piece of the clean energy puzzle.
“In order to have affordable, reliable and secure energy in Australia, bans on gas projects must be lifted.
SACOME’s State Election priorities call for the rejection of resources moratoria by all South Australian political parties.
