A smooth road to Innamincka Town
The South Australian Chamber of Mines and Energy (SACOME) welcomes the South Australian Government’s $10 million commitment to seal the first 50km of the Strzelecki Track, north of Lyndhurst.
SACOME has consistently advocated for sealing of the Strzelecki Track, most recently flagging it as a priority road maintenance project in road maintenance and COVID-19 economic recovery discussions with the South Australian Government.
The Strzelecki Track is a vital supply link for South Australia’s major oil and gas operators in the Cooper Basin and today’s announcement is a long-awaited first step in improving a critical transport route for the South Australian resources sector.
SACOME recognises that sealing the Strzelecki Track will result in productivity and safety benefits for multiple industry sectors as well as provide a ‘shovel ready’ project to assist South Australia’s post COVID-19 economic recovery.
Rebecca Knol, Chief Executive Officer said "The recent release of South Australia’s 20-Year State Infrastructure Strategy recognised the resource sector’s outstanding mineral, oil and gas resources; and the requirement for infrastructure solutions that provide efficient routes to market."
The works announced for the Strzelecki Track represent a timely investment in one of South Australia’s economically important transport routes. It is encouraging to see regional projects that can make a significant economic contribution to the State appropriately valued and prioritised.
SACOME acknowledges both Minister van Holst Pellekaan’s and Minister Knoll’s support for this project and supports their call for Federal Government funding for works on the Strzelecki Track.
SACOME notes that South Australia has a $750 million road maintenance backlog across the State and has called on the government to increase funding to $300 million per annum over the next 5 years to improve productivity and safety outcomes for the resources, agricultural and freight sectors. Sealing of the Strzelecki Track is a welcome contribution to addressing this backlog.
The South Australian resources sector is well-poised to play an important role in the South Australia’s post COVID-19 recovery and already employs 26,000 people directly and indirectly, delivers $6.4 billion in production, $5.3 billion in exports and $299 million in royalties to South Australians.
