Scholarships Continue to Unearth Hidden Gems 

The partnership between the South Australian Chamber of Mines and Energy (SACOME), the South Australian Government and the Playford Trust continues to provide outstanding scholarship opportunities for school leavers enrolling in mining or petroleum engineering at the University of Adelaide.
 
The scholarships provide eligible students with $10,000 a year for two (2) years; and are co-funded by leading resources companies Beach Energy, BHP, Cooper Energy, OZ Minerals, Santos, Tri-Star and the State Government.
 
Tonight, the successful 2021 applicants attended an award ceremony. The first step in their resource sector journey.
 
Minister for Energy and Mining Dan van Holst Pellekaan MP said “the Marshall Government recognises the importance of the resources and energy sectors in delivering short, medium and long-term economic growth for South Australia.”
 
“I’m extremely pleased our Government will fund scholarships through the Playford Trust to provide students studying STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) subjects with a pathway to the University of Adelaide’s petroleum and mining engineering programmes.”
 
“Scholarship recipients will go on to well-paid and secure jobs in an important growth area for our state.”
 
SACOME CEO Rebecca Knol said: “These scholarships aim to attract South Australia’s most talented minds to an industry that is leading our technological future.”
 
“As well as being at the cutting edge of innovation, the resources sector produces the materials that enable the boundaries of science to be challenged.”
 
“As we strive to decarbonise our future, these students will be instrumental in shaping the modern world.“
 
Former Premier of South Australia and Chair of the Playford Trust, Dean Brown said: “The Playford Trust has seen a ten-fold increase in mining engineering scholarship applications in 2021.”
 
“The Trust is pleased that this scholarship program is achieving its aims of encouraging young South Australians into the mining and petroleum industries, that play a vital role in our economy.”
 
“The University of Adelaide is pleased to collaborate with SACOME, the State Government and Playford Trust to address the skill shortage in such an important Industry in South Australia,” says Professor Katrina Falkner, Executive Dean, Faculty of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences, University of Adelaide.
 
“These scholarships will assist our student engineers pursue a career in the mining and petroleum sector.”
 
Previous scholarship recipient, Kym Wyatt-Read said: “the scholarship will allow me to leave University with a small HECS debt and the confidence I need to pursue my dream of working on new mine designs to push forward environmental sustainability and make a difference.”
