SIMEC Mining leads the way with commitment to sustainable development in South Australia
First company signs new Code of Conduct for the SA resources industry
The South Australian Chamber of Mines and Energy (SACOME) has launched a Code of Conduct to drive continuous improvement in the South Australian resources sector.
SIMEC Mining – a part of the GFG Alliance - is the first signatory to the Code, leading the way for mining, oil and gas companies across the state.
SIMEC Mining owns iron ore operations in the Middleback Ranges of South Australia, around 60km from Whyalla.
SACOME’s voluntary Code of Conduct has been adopted from the Minerals Council of Australia’s Enduring Value framework for sustainable development and provides a structure for mining, oil and gas companies to demonstrate commitment to sustainable development.
By adopting this Code of Conduct, resource companies can improve their practices in areas such as ethical governance, sound risk management and transparent engagement, health and safety, employee rights, community development and environmental management.
SACOME CEO, Rebecca Knol said: “The Code of Conduct aims to ignite improvements for the SA resources sector and maximise the long-term societal benefits that can be achieved through the effective management of our State’s natural resources. It allows us to shine a light on the resource companies operating in line with global leading practice and provide a benchmark for development”.
SIMEC Mining’s Chief Operating Officer Matt Reed said: “SIMEC Mining is proud of its high standards of performance across all of the South Australian Chamber of Mines & Energy’s Code of Conduct Principles. The decision to sign-up to SACOME’s Code of Conduct was an easy one. The importance of industry demonstrating leadership and commitment to high standards cannot be overstated and we embrace the opportunity to improve”.
